NEW HEIGHTS FOR EASTERN CONNECTICUT HEALTH NETWORK ACADEMY
Long-serving Clinical Day School is now New Heights Academy
Eastern Connecticut Health Network is excited to announce that the Clinical Day School at Manchester Memorial Hospital has a new name: New Heights Academy.
The new name reflects a positive direction for the school which is continuing to build a place where students feel supported, challenged, and ready to reach new goals. The Academy’s commitment to helping students grow, achieve, and succeed is stronger than ever with added services and support for students and families.
“The name change came in response to feedback from our students. New Heights is an inspiring name for a school community that is supportive and positive, a place that helps our students thrive” said New Heights Academy Director of Education Patricia Sobraske.
Over the past year, the school has made meaningful improvements to better serve our students and families, including:
- Launching an improved online platform for school due dates, calendar of events, and grade tracking
- Expanding staffing and resources, including a Board-Certified Behavioral Analyst (BCBA) to provide additional support to students and staff
New Heights Academy is an Approved Private Special Education Program (APSEP) that is credentialed by the Connecticut State Department of Education. The curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Standards. Classroom instruction is driven by students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and is flexible in order to meet the needs of complex learners with differing capabilities and learning styles.
Using a trauma-informed approach, our teachers and staff meet students where they are, both academically and socially-emotionally. Teachers then work to build trusting relationships, enabling students to feel safe. Small teacher-to-student ratios (1:6) and student-centered instruction foster intellectual curiosity, leading to academic momentum. Students benefit from small, supportive academic environment where they build confidence and practice new skills before reintegrating with their public school.
The school is affiliated with Manchester Memorial Hospital’s Behavioral Health Department providing both students and their families access needed outpatient services, including psychiatric services, medication management, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient services as well as individual and family therapy services. Students also participate in a work-study program called Cooperative Work Experience, where they are partnered with different departments in the hospital to learn employment skills.
