ECHN, Walden to Open Inpatient Eating Disorders Unit at Rockville General Hospital

Published:

Eastern Connecticut Hospital Network (ECHN), a community-based health care system, and Walden Behavioral Care, LLC of Waltham, Mass., a leading hospital for treating eating disorders, has today announced the opening of a 30-bed inpatient eating disorders unit at Rockville General Hospital, located at 31 Union Street.

The Eating Disorders Center at Rockville Hospital is the first of its kind in Connecticut that is dedicated to treating both adults and adolescents with advanced eating disorders. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 3.4% of the Connecticut population has an eating disorder, affecting an estimated 122,000 individuals.

“We recognized the need for inpatient treatment for eating disorders in Connecticut, which will enable our residents and those of neighboring states to be treated closer to home,” said ECHN President & CEO Peter Karl.  “This partnership will help so many members of our community to get the level of treatment that they need.”

This is the second venture for the ECHN Walden partnership.  Walden has been operating a clinic that provides outpatient treatment for eating disorders at ECHN’s South Windsor medical office campus, 2400 Tamarack Ave., since 2012.  Walden also recently opened a clinic in Guilford.

“Eating disorders impact thousands of residents in Connecticut alone, with the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder,” said Walden President and CEO Dr. Stuart Koman.  “We’re honored to partner with the amazing team at ECHN to deliver first-class service and specialized care, opening the doors to boundless possibilities of hope for residents across the region.”

The Eating Disorders Center at Rockville Hospital will treat patients suffering from anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder or OSFED (Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders.)  If you or someone you know has an eating disorder, please visit www.echn.org/eatingdisorders for more information.
