Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN) is pleased to announce that the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System with Firefly technology is now at Manchester Memorial Hospital and has already been put into service. ECHN is the only health system in the state of Connecticut that has and has used this safest and most advanced technology in surgery.
The da Vinci® Si™ has several unique features designed to provide additional clinical benefits and efficiency in the operating room, which translate to patient benefits.

This newest version of the da Vinci also includes Firefly technology, which is an integrated fluorescence imaging capability that provides surgeons real-time, image-guided identification of key anatomical landmarks using near-infrared technology.
A dye is administered by an anesthesiologist. The dye then binds to plasma proteins in blood. The dye under the robot’s special fluoroscopic camera shows up "firefly green" and shows the difference between cancerous and healthy tissue, as well as the blood supply to a tumor. This allows for a more accurate removal of a tumor as the surgeon can leave the healthy tissue of the organ in place and potentially lowers the risk of any cancer being left behind.
Surgeons are able to quickly switch back and forth between Firefly imaging and normal white light. The fluorescence imaging made possible with Firefly technology allows surgeons to see and assess anatomy better than the naked eye, further enhancing the unmatched vision, precision and control of minimally invasive da Vinci® surgery.
This system places Manchester Memorial Hospital in a very elite group of hospitals nationwide with this capability.

In fact, when the surgeon pulls back from the view screen, da Vinci freezes — until the surgeon returns to become fully engaged with da Vinci's controls. Compared with human physiology, da Vinci's enhanced visualization of the surgical field and increased dexterity enables surgeons to be more precise. As a result, surgeons can advance their technique and enhance their capability for performing complex, minimally invasive surgery.”
