2012 Olympian Gold Medalist Eric Shanteau Featured Guest Speaker at ECHN’s Annual Cancer Survivor’s Day

Eastern Connecticut Health Network’s (ECHN) John A. DeQuattro Cancer Center will hold its Annual Cancer Survivor’sDay, A Celebration of Life, on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at the Hartford/Windsor Marriott, 28 Day Hill Road, Windsor, Connecticut. This free program celebrates the lives of cancer survivors and the families, friends and health care providers who have supported the fight every step of the way. Doors will open at noon.

The featured guest speaker is cancer survivor and 2012 Olympian gold medalist Eric Shanteau, who will share his inspirational story, Keeping My Head Above Water: Resilience in the Face of Adversity.

Shanteau was diagnosed with testicular cancer just 10 days before qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team competing in the 2008 Beijing games. While his body battled cancer, he swam his way to a personal best time. Six days after returning from Beijing, Shanteau began his treatment for cancer, and that is when he did the impossible. He not only beat cancer, but returned to the water faster than ever. Less than a year after battling the disease he shattered records and became a World Champion. With a new perspective on life and the sport of swimming, Shanteau would spend the next three years at the top of the world ranks. Then, after qualifying for his second Olympic team, he won a gold medal at the 2012 London games as a member of the 4 x 100 medley relay.

Shanteau is the true embodiment of resilience and perseverance. After his diagnosis he joined the fight against cancer by becoming a LIVESTRONG™ global envoy. He travels the country promoting awareness and straight, open talk about cancer. His story of overcoming adversity while competing at the highest level of sport continues to inspire millions of people worldwide.

Guests will be treated to a complimentary buffet lunch. Giveaways and valuable health information will be available to take home. Registration is required by May 28. To register online, visit or call 860.533.6550.
