Why Short-Term Rehab?
The rehabilitation program evolved in response to shorter hospital stays. In the past, patients simply stayed at a hospital until they were well enough to go home without needing too much assistance. Today, however, because hospital stays are expensive, insurance companies are not paying for stays that are any longer than medically necessary – and many people aren't well enough to return home after their discharge.
Most people come to Woodlake for short-term rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery, such as joint replacement or back surgery. Others come for rehabilitation following a stroke, pneumonia, heart surgery, a spinal cord injury, or an accident. Because short-term rehabilitation patients do not stay long, there isn't a long waiting list for this service. Nearly everyone who needs the short-term program can be accommodated.
Realizing the tremendous importance of services to help people recover from an illness or injury, ECHN has been extending its rehabilitation services throughout the communities it serves.
In the past, rehabilitation simply meant physical therapy, the goal of which is to reduce pain and increase strength. Occupational therapy and speech therapy were later added. The goal of occupational therapy is to increase independence in any activity of daily life, such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, a favorite hobby, or working at a job. Speech therapy not only addresses communication, but also swallowing and cognitive abilities.
Therapists work together as a team, and many rehabilitation services overlap. For example, an accident victim might need both physical and occupational therapy to recover as much as possible while learning how to adapt to new limitations. Some people recovering from a stroke might benefit from a combination of physical, occupational and speech therapy, to re-teach the brain information it might have lost.
For short-term rehabilitation patients at Woodlake, the goal is to help them return to home as soon as possible and be able to perform as many activities of daily living as they can. For long-term Woodlake residents, rehabilitation services offer relief from pain, better mobility, and recovery from disabling conditions such as a heart attack or stroke.
