Surgery Services
More is understood about disease prevention today than ever before, but sometimes disease occurs despite the best efforts at prevention. In those cases, surgery is a treatment option that has advanced light-years in just the past several decades.
Surgeons at ECHN offer the latest in minimally invasive surgical techniques, called laparoscopy. In laparoscopy, a camera and light source is passed through a tiny incision in the body. Specially designed instruments are also passed through tiny incisions, and the surgeon operates while watching the images recorded by the camera and displayed on a monitor in the operating room. Some of the incisions are so small that they do not even need to be closed with sutures.

Minimally invasive procedures can offer:
- Less pain
- Shorter hospital stays
- Less of a need for blood transfusions
- A quicker return to normal activities
While minimally invasive procedures are not always the best option for everyone, they can be used in more patients and more types of surgery today.
At Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital, many types of general surgery procedures can be performed laparoscopically including:
- Gallbladder
- Colon
- Stomach
- Adrenal glands
- Appendix
- Hernia
- Some types of cancer surgery
Many experts believe it is important for people to have access to surgical care right in their own community. Being closer to home, and to family and friends, can help patients’ emotional well-being. It also can make visits easier on family members and friends.
