Minimally Invasive Surgery

Both Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital have a comprehensive robotic and minimally invasive surgery program. As leaders in robotic and minimally invasive procedures, our physicians use special techniques that enhance precision and allow them to operate through tiny incisions – or, sometimes, without incisions at all.

At ECHN, we have the very latest in robotic surgery technology and talented specialists/surgeons practicing the most advanced techniques. In addition, dedicated, professionally certified staff and teams take excellent care of our patients, all contributing to an excellent patient experience and positive outcomes.

We offer all of this combined with the personal touch of community-based hospitals. Our specialists/surgeons and teams work collaboratively to provide a multidisciplinary approach that is focused on you, our patient.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Specialties

Robotic and minimally invasive surgery is performed within these surgical specialties:

  • • Bariatric (Weight loss) surgery
  • • Colon and rectal surgery
  • • General surgery
  • • Gynecology surgery
  • • Orthopedic surgery
  • • Ear, nose and throat (otolaryngology) surgery
  • • Spine surgery
  • • Urology
  • • Vascular surgery

About Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery involves making tiny incisions, sometimes no more than a quarter-inch in length. This results in less trauma to the body versus an open incision. Robotic surgery is a form of minimally invasive surgery.

Sometimes, ports are inserted through these incisions, allowing the surgeon to introduce instruments into the body cavity. One of these incisions is used for a tiny camera so the surgeon and staff can view the operation from a flat-panel monitor.

For other minimally invasive surgeries, techniques and tools are used that disrupt the inner body as little as possible.

Because minimally invasive techniques reduce the trauma associated with surgical procedures, patients can recover faster.

There are many benefits to choosing minimally invasive surgery over traditional surgery:

  • • Better outcomes related to surgery precision
  • • Less pain after surgery
  • • Less scarring or no scarring
  • • Lower risk of infection
  • • Shorter hospital stays
  • • Shorter recovery
  • • Quicker return to normal activities
  • • Reduced costs for patients

Because minimally invasive surgery usually requires only tiny incisions, patients are generally able to return to work and get back to their normal daily activities faster than with open, or traditional, surgery.

About Robotic Surgery

Manchester Memorial Hospital is proud to be the only hospital in eastern Connecticut to offer robotic surgery using the da Vinci® Xi Surgical System. This robot is the latest in advanced surgical technology and provides excellent surgical outcomes.

The new technology provides a natural extension of the surgeon’s eyes and hands into the patient.

  • • Highly magnified 3D HD vision ensures that surgeons can see the surgical site with true depth perception and crystal-clear vision.
  • • Wristed instruments that bend and rotate far beyond the human hand. Tremor filtration and Intuitive Motion technologies allow the surgeon to operate with a steady, natural motion.
  • • Enhances ergonomics make performing surgery feel comfortable and natural
