ECHN Receives $40,000 Challenge Grant from The Timken Foundation
May 17, 2011 -
MANCHESTER, CONNECTICUT – Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN) recently received a $40,000 challenge grant from The Timken Foundation of Canton to purchase a DynaCAD imaging system that will increase productivity and accuracy of breast imaging.
A challenge grant, also known as a matching grant, is paid when the recipient organization is able to raise additional funds from another source(s). ECHN and its donors were able to meet the challenge to purchase this state-of-the-art technology by raising funds from individual donors, direct mail campaigns, and ECHN employees, who donated to the ECHN employee campaign.
The DynaCAD imaging system is an advanced computer-aided-detection (CAD) system. DynaCAD provides radiologists with a number of new tools for enhancing current breast MRI diagnostic services, and provides more detailed information related to breast MRI exams.
CAD is a useful tool for the improved detection of breast cancer and could reduce the number of missed cancers, as well as positively impact breast cancer prognosis, without increasing the patient recall rate or the physician's workload. For ECHN this means that over 400 patients will benefit yearly. CAD will help with both diagnosing breast cancers from MRI, and helping perform biopsies with MRI guidance.
ECHN welcomes challenge grants that allow the health system to raise significant funds in support of upgrades to its facilities, purchases of cutting-edge technology, and helping to maintain programs and services for system growth in order to provide the highest level of care to the communities it serves. ECHN is currently looking for challenge grants for its Take Pride initiative and the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine program at ECHN, as well as other needed medical equipment.
Anyone interested in providing a challenge grant should contact Stan Kontogiannis, Corporate and Foundation Relations Officer, at 860-872-5056 or via email at Skontogiannis@echn.org.
