ECHN Honors its Doctors and Allied Health Professionals

Apr 17, 2012 -

On Thursday, April 5, Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN) held its 13th Annual Doctors’ Day Celebration to honor its physicians and allied health professionals for their unwavering commitment to their patients and colleagues and their countless contributions to society.

Over 250 people attended this year’s Doctors’ Day Celebration at the Downtown Marriott in Hartford. Attendees included doctors, allied health professionals, board members, administration and staff. Families of the honorees also attended the event.

Four physicians and one allied health professional were nominated by the ECHN Medical Staff for demonstrating outstanding achievements and accomplishments. The following awards – in five different categories – were presented to:

Aziza Omrani, MD (Obstetrics/Gynecology) received the “Community Service Award” for her volunteerism, particularly for her recent global humanitarian efforts in assisting Libyans to receive needed health care as a result of the Libyan Revolution. Most recently, Dr. Omrani played a key role in helping a 29-year old Libyan woman receive critical health care at ECHN due to a traumatic injury she sustained in April 2011.

Anthony J. DiStefano, MD (Urology) received the “Professional Excellence Award” in recognition of his dedication to Medical Staff leadership and his advocacy in advancing surgical care at ECHN. Due to his efforts – along with his medical and nursing colleagues – Robotic surgery was introduced at ECHN in 2008. Manchester Memorial Hospital was the first hospital in eastern Connecticut to introduce the daVinci Surgical System.

Patricio G. Bruno, DO (Hospital Medicine), received the “New Practitioner Award” for his efforts in establishing medical student education at ECHN. Dr. Bruno’s leadership led to an affiliation with the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) that resulted in 16 third-year medical students coming to ECHN in July 2011 to begin their academic and clinical training. He is currently working on the development of a Family Medicine Residency Program at Manchester Memorial Hospital.

Lynn L. Fletcher, APRN (Infectious Disease) received the “Allied Health Professional Excellence Award” for her commitment and dedication to advanced practice nursing and her patients. She joined the ECHN Allied Professional Staff in 2001 and was employed by ECHN as an advanced acute care nurse with the Hospitalist Service before joining the Connecticut Health Care Group in 2009.

Robert D. Rodner, MD (Urology) received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his career-long contributions to the practice of urology as well as his governance, leadership and dedication to his patients and the surrounding community. He has held many medical staff leadership positions, co-initiated “Bike Connect” to raise money for nursing scholarships and is a mentor to many physicians at ECHN who have held Medical Staff leader positions.

ECHN presented other special awards, including the “Milestone Awards” to physicians with 10 or more years of membership on the health system’s Medical Staff and the “Star Awards” to nine practitioners who demonstrated excellence in their daily practice while adhereing to ECHN’s Core Values: Teamwork, Respect and Communication through a Commitment to Caring.

The evening was also an opportunity to introduce the new members of the health system’s active medical staff and allied health professional staff and recognize the medical students from UNECOM who are completing their third-year training requirements at ECHN.

In 1990, in honor of doctors across the country, Congress overwhelmingly approved Senate Joint Resolution 366 which designated March 30 as “National Doctors’ Day.” In February 1991, the President of the United States made it official by proclaiming March 30, 1991, as “National Doctors’ Day.” The Doctors’ Day celebration has become a much-anticipated annual event at ECHN.
