10th Annual ECHN Bike Connect Event
Apr 19, 2012 -
The annual ECHN Bike Connect, which is in its 10th year, will take place on Sunday, May 20, starting at the host site, Visiting Nurse & Health Services of Connecticut. The event has welcomed over 200 cyclists and walkers each year. Participants include members of the community, teams from local businesses and ECHN employees.
Since its inception, the event has raised more than $235,000 towards nursing scholarships for ECHN employees wishing to further their nursing education or become a nurse. The goal of the Bike Connect scholarships is to help address the local nursing shortage. By 2015, the United States will need more than 1.2 million new and replacement nurses to keep up with growing health care demands, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The scholarships also help our health system retain existing nurses by supporting their career advancement and add to the supply of nurses by assisting employees in their efforts to become nurses.
The 23-mile bicycle course connects Woodlake at Tolland, Rockville General Hospital, Manchester Memorial Hospital and the Visiting Nurse & Health Services of Connecticut facilities. Cyclists can also choose a 43-mile route, which adds the Glastonbury Wellness Center, another affiliate of Eastern Connecticut Health Network, to the 23-mile route. Also part of the event is a Nurses Walk, which is a six-mile course.
Seventy-four employees have taken advantage of the scholarship over the previous nine years and reached for their dreams.
